Psychotherapy/ Counseling

A person may be troubled by certain thoughts, feelings or behaviors, and seek out a friend or relative to talk to. However, some thoughts are difficult to talk about with friends.
There are subjects by their very nature are more difficult to discuss with friends or family, such as; sexual issues, relationships, suicide, fears. A good meaning friend may not be able to help you through these times, without advise-giving or making judgments. Psychotherapy is just the place where you can speak freely about your deepest thoughts and feelings without judgment or fear that your information may not be confidential. My clients tell me, I have created a safe environment to work on some of these thoughts and feelings. In my practice I work to help you clarify and make sense of your conflicting feelings. As an insightful, well-trained therapist, I make it comfortable to explore your feelings, in an accepting and non-judgmental manner.

Secret fears are examined gently; in order give comfort to the client as they move forward at their own pace. Using cognitive behavioral, client centered, rational emotive and Gestalt methods of treatment, I have been able to combine a treatment method which is called "eclectic".
The second step in this exploration after the understanding of the issues is to develop a plan of action. Thirty years experience in this field have thought me that clients need more than just awareness of the problem. Making a plan of action and carrying it out, gives the client sense of empowerment and gives them the ability to trust there decision making . The basic belief which I adhere to is that we all the capacity to change behaviors and core beliefs that are causing our distress.
Therapy is either face to face or on the telephone.

Couples and Family Counseling
How can couples heal a relationship that is in trouble? By identifying the source of their shared distress. Couples can develop patterns of behavior that can slowly unfold into painful dramas. Such cycles of dysfunction are not easy to change without intervention. Many people are simply not aware of their own behavior; it usually takes a trained counselor to help people gain some objectivity and clarity about their own actions. Such a professional can help a couple see how their personal beliefs and behavior patterns are harming their relationship.

As a Certified Hynotherapist I have helped many clients reach a state of restful alertness and focused openness towards self-improvement and healing.
Through enhanced imagery and relaxation techniques the client can be distracted from intrusive thoughts and sounds around themselves. and concentrate on the suggestions of specific goals. The techniques have pre and post suggestion components. During the pre-suggestion phase the subjects focus on relaxation, distraction, and imagery. The suggestion phase is characterized by introduction of specific goals. The post-suggestion phase involves continued use of the new behavior following the hypnotherapy.
When clients are in the relaxed state there is a change in the brain wave activity, similar to that time just before sleep when the alpha state is entered.
|
| The alpha state is a very dreamy, pleasant state. During this time the mind is very open to suggestions, visualizations and creating a rich sensory experience. Hypnotherapy allows you to contact the subconscious mind directly where we are able to make changes more readily and accept positive suggestions. The subconscious mind is the control center for the autonomic bodily functions, behaviors and emotions as well as the locations where we all store all of our past experiences and traumas. This could partially explain the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for pain, addictions, phobias, and stress related illness.
The American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association approved hypnotherapy for use by professionally responsible clinicians in 1958.

Do you have trouble with eating, drinking, and loving too much? Does your partying get in the way of you professional life? Does a friend or family member think you might have a problem? Do your relationships have all difficulty? Are you obsessed with the way your body looks?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, your chemical or non-chemical behaviors need attention.
Shame, guilt, anxiety, embarrassment, fear, and loss of the ability to be honest with yourself and others, might be some of the feelings you may be experiencing.
I have developed an action plan to make life changes for you. Each treatment plan is a cooperative effort, between you and me. This plan is tailored to your individual needs along with methods that are common to all chemical dependency treatment.
Some of the same methods used to overcome chemical dependency (e.g., participating in support groups, learning new coping skills, and finding replacement methods and activities for the things you can't safely do anymore) also help you deal with compulsive behaviors outside of the realm of drinking and using drugs.
Many people with destructive, compulsive behavioral patterns or non-chemical addictions can be classified as addictions. For example: eating disorders, gambling, co-dependency, relationship/love addictions, nicotine, sexual compulsivity, anger or rage.
Therapy is available either in person or on the telephone.
